Understanding Car Issues

When I began thinking more seriously about car issues, it occurred to me that there were a few things I needed to do if I wanted to make things easier for myself in the long run. For starters, I began taking my car in for regular auto service, which really helped out. It was really interesting to see how many different things had to be fixed every time I went in, but when my car didn't have as many problems, I could tell that it was really paying off. This website is all about understanding and preventing car problems by making better choices.

Must-Have Boating Safety Accessories

by Micheal Barrett

Taking friends and family out on the water is one of the great pleasures of owning a boat. Naturally, you want to make sure everyone stays safe so that they can have a good time. The following marine accessories are must-haves to ensure every boating experience is as safe as possible.

Life jackets

Accidents can result in a person overboard. Make sure to keep a range of life jackets on hand in a variety of sizes, from small ones for children to larger ones for adults. If comfort is a concern, low-profile life jackets are available. Opt for styles that are made to keep the person afloat on their back, especially when shopping for children's jackets. These work well to prevent drowning even if the wearer can't swim, is unconscious, or is thrashing about.

Throwable floats

A throwable float, sometimes referred to as a ring or sling, is there for helping those without jackets who end up overboard. A throwable float should be anchored to the boat with a rope. This way, it can be used to pull someone back to the boat without the need for anyone else to get into the water.

Fire extinguisher

Although not common, it's not unheard of for boats to experience electrical or motor fires. A fire extinguisher should be kept on deck at all times. If your boat has a galley, then a second extinguisher should be kept near this area as well.

Swimmer's flags

If you plan to have swimmers in the water or to participate in any water sports like skiing, then a swimmer's flag and mount is required. These bright orange flags are placed high on the boat where other boaters can see them. They alert others when someone is in the water, warning them to go slowly and give your boat a wide berth.

Distress equipment

Sometimes emergencies occur and you need to be able to get help quickly. Don't depend on cell phones, since the signals may not be reliable on the water. Your boat should have a working horn and a working VHF radio. A loaded flare gun is also helpful if you need to call for help and your tech is not working.

Consider the above the bare minimum. There are other safety items that are helpful but not required, such as GPS systems or weather radios. Visit a marine supplier to see all of your options.
